E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA). It allows employers to verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees by electronically matching information provided by employees on the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, against records available to the SSA and DHS.
Employers typically use E-Verify to confirm the identity and employment eligibility of newly hired employees, ensuring that they are authorized to work in the United States. This helps employers maintain a legal workforce and comply with federal immigration laws.
E-Verify is voluntary for most employers, but some states have implemented laws requiring certain employers to use the system. Additionally, federal contractors and subcontractors are required to use E-Verify for all newly hired employees, regardless of their location or the nature of their work.
